The Fairfield Rotary Club, in cooperation with the Fairfield Police Department, will be registering children in the AMBER Alert emergency response system on Saturday, October 11th from 10 AM to 4 PM at the Westy Storage Center in Fairfield located at 2070 Kings Highway.
In June of this year Fairfield Rotary held the first signup event with over 300 children getting registered. This event allows parents the opportunity to register their children up to the age of 18 in the database and obtain an identification card. During registration a picture is taken and a description of the child is logged into the nationwide confidential database. The AMBER Alert database is used and accessed by various local authorities in the event a child is missing. The ID card can be used by parents trying to track down a child.
The goal of the AMBER Alert System, named for 9-year old Amber Hagerman, is to instantly notify the entire state, so everyone may assist in the search for the safe return of the child. The public immediately becomes the ears and eyes of law enforcement and can assist in the search for the missing child. AMBER Alert programs have helped save the lives of over 350 children nationwide. Over 90 percent of those recoveries have occurred since October 2002.
The Fairfield Rotary Club and Fairfield Police Department are being assisted by the Danbury Rotary Club which is providing the customized computer terminals and photography equipment.
The event will also feature Fairfield Rotary Club supporter ShredStation Express. The locally-owned and operated information destruction company will be on hand to highlight the importance of securely destroying private and personal information. At the event, the first 100 event attendees interested in destroying and recycling computers and computer hard drives will be able to enlist the hard drive destruction and recycling services of ShredStation Express at no charge other than a $10 donation to the Fairfield Rotary Club. Interested parties do not need to bring computers to the event as ShredStation Express will pick them up at your business or residence. Customers following the first 100 participants will benefit from a 30% discount from ShredStation Express' traditional pricing. Ten dollars from each of these transactions will also go to the Fairfield Rotary Club via a donation from ShredStation Express.
Further support is being provided by sponsors of the event:
Attorney George Markley of Fairfield
People Insurance & Investments
The Bank of Fairfield
Lesko & Polke Funeral Home of Fairfield Center
Their sponsorship will allow for registration and one identification card to be free though additional identification cards cost $2.
The registration is a first-come, first-served event; all are welcome and encouraged to participate. The Fairfield Rotary Club is arranging for entertainment for children waiting in line to be registered.
